- New design, same look: dark mode, bigger type, a layout that works on today’s phones, and the 2014 logo redrawn as an SVG.
- Posts now have topics, reading times, related posts, a table of contents on long ones, and links to the next post in the same topic.
- New pages: About, Contact, Subscribe, Colophon, Privacy, Timeline, Stats, Start Here and every page.
- An archive by year and month, topics, search and a random post button.
- Code is highlighted at build time with Shiki, with copy buttons, language labels and file names.
- Old posts from 2014 and earlier now say how old they are.
- The 2010 date on the copyright line is now 1995, when I started writing online.
- New posts by email: subscribe from any post or the subscribe page. There’s a confirmation email first, and every email has a one-click unsubscribe.
- 31 older technical posts now have a short “2026 update” note saying what’s changed and what to use today.
- Images in old posts have real descriptions (alt text) for screen readers, instead of “image” and “Screenshot”.
- 70 dead links in old posts now point to archived copies on the Wayback Machine, or to where the page lives today.
- Every post has its own link-preview card when it’s shared.
- Follow the blog from Mastodon (or anywhere in the fediverse): search for @blog@deallocatedobjects.com. New posts show up right in your timeline.
- Scheduled posts now go live on their own, right on time.
- A cookieless page-view count, so I can see which posts people read without tracking anyone. The privacy page has the details.
- Opening the RSS feed in a browser shows a readable page explaining what it is, instead of raw XML.
